River Excursion
May 22, 2004 ![]() Loading provisions at the Banks, Oregon siding. A shot of our coach 'Plum Creek' ![]() The first car after the engines, on the way out, was an open Gondola car. Nice views before the rain started. ![]() Leaving the Wolf Creek tunnel. Everybody else is looking forward because you immediately start crossing the Wolf Creek Trestle. ![]() Wolf Creek Trestle, looking toward back of train. ![]() Middle of the Wolf Creek switchback in big timber. ![]() Salmonberry River - One of the finest Salmon and Trout streams in Oregon. The area is mostly roadless and the only real access is on the rail line. The Port of Tillamook has done it's best to accomodate the fishermen with walkways on trestles and informational signs. In the middle of nowhere, in the rain, about 40 crazy folks (me included) got off the train, so we could stand in the wet grass to take pictures of the train going by. ![]() Driveby 1 ![]() Driveby 2 ![]() Driveby 3 ![]() Driveby 4 ![]() Driveby 5 ![]() Driveby 6 ![]() And some of the crazy people after the driveby ![]() Our turnaround point. The confluence of the Salmonberry and Nehalem River. ![]() The Nehalem River on it's way to the Pacific Ocean, about 20 miles downstream. |
